Having the correct level of protection is especially important when selecting lighting for use in a bathroom. All fixtures and fittings are required to be controlled by a pull cord, all switches that control light fittings should be outside the bathroom with fittings being suitable for use in the bathroom. Below is a brief guide to help you understand what fittings can be placed where.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE ALL FITTINGS INSTALLED BY A PART P QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN.
Zone 0:
Any fittings here must be low voltage (max 12V) and be protected against immersion in water.
Zone 1:
Above the bath or shower to a height of 2.25m, must be minimum IP-7 (See this PDF for details on IP ratings and what they mean). Protection against vertically falling drops of water, for example condensation.
Zone 2:
This is stretching to 0.6 metres outside the bath or shower and above the bath or shower if over 2.25 metres, IP-4
Protection against direct sprays or water up to 15 degrees from vertical.
Zone 3:
Anywhere outside zones 0,1 and 2. Where water jets are not to be used for cleaning purposes, no IP requirement.
Protection against direct sprays or water up to 60 degrees from vertical.
